J Batt will officially begin his tenure as the University of Kentucky’s athletic director and CEO of Champions Blue LLC on July 28, 2026. The appointment concludes a period of uncertainty regarding his departure from Michigan State University, which involves a negotiated $3.95 million buyout payment to be completed by July 1, 2027. UK President Eli Capilouto confirmed earlier this week that the school’s new AD would join the fold soon, and the university officially announced the start date on Thursday.
Transition Timeline and the Michigan State Buyout
The path to Lexington for J Batt was complicated by a shifting contract clause at Michigan State University. While Kentucky initially announced his hire on June 15, his start date remained in flux as legal teams from both universities negotiated the terms of his exit. MSU Vice President of Communications and spokesperson Emily Guerrant confirmed Batt’s date of departure. Batt was temporarily listed on both universities’ athletic staff directories as negotiations continued. Guerrant could not comment on what he may or may not have been doing for Kentucky, noting, “I can just say that he has continued to be an employee of Michigan State, and has shown up for work, and now we have an end date that we’re working towards for him to make the transition to the University of Kentucky.”
The financial stakes centered on a specific clause in Batt’s contract, which stated he owed $5 million if he left before July 1, 2027. However, that figure was slated to be cut in half should MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz leave the university. When Guskiewicz announced in May that he was departing for Clemson, the potential buyout for Kentucky dropped to $2.5 million. The situation changed again on July 6 when Guskiewicz rescinded his move to Clemson and opted to remain in East Lansing on a new five-year, $5 million contract, effectively raising the buyout ceiling back to $5 million. Following negotiations between the legal departments of the two universities, they settled on a final payment of $3.95 million, to be paid between now and July 1, 2027, according to UK’s news release.
Leadership Changes at Michigan State University
With Batt’s departure date confirmed, Michigan State moved quickly to address the vacancy in its athletic department. On July 10, 2026, the university appointed Jon Palumbo as interim athletic director. Palumbo, who previously served as executive deputy athletic director and chief operating officer at Michigan State, will also continue his role as CEO of Spartan Ventures. Michigan State Athletics stated that over the past year, Palumbo has played a key role in the innovation and advancement of the department.

Batt’s tenure at Michigan State included significant fundraising success. During his time as athletics director, he helped lock down Greg and Dawn Williams’ $401 million donation, $390 million of which was directed to MSU athletics. Guskiewicz had recruited Batt from the ACC in 2025, and the two were reportedly in lockstep in all fundraising efforts for the athletics department. The two previously met at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where Guskiewicz led concussion research while Batt was a graduate assistant on the university’s soccer team. Notably, Batt helped that team win a national championship as a goalkeeper in 2001.
Strategic Goals for Kentucky Athletics
At the University of Kentucky, Batt inherits a department currently overseen by the president’s office following the June 30 retirement of longtime athletic director Mitch Barnhart. Barnhart is set to receive over $3 million over the course of three years as part of his settlement agreement.

The president’s office retains oversight of the athletics department until Batt starts his new job.
