Killarney Floods: Worst in a Lifetime as Dublin Issues Orange Rain Warning

Flash Flooding Hits Killarney and Dublin

Parts of Killarney and Cabra experienced significant flooding on Thursday night, according to Kerry County Council. Killarney saw torrential downpours, leaving several roads impassable due to significant flash flooding, Kerry County Council stated on X. Footage posted on social media showed flooding on Park Road and Countess Road in Killarney, as well as Offaly Road in Cabra Dublin 7, next to Christ the King Boys National School and church. Kerry County Council also reported that the N22 road was closed at the bottom of Pike Hill near Killarney. By 10pm, the council stated that flooding was substantially cleared from Park Road and Countess Road, and fire brigade crews were stood down, though officials urged the public to continue traveling with care.

Impact on Homes, Businesses, and Transport

Mayor of Killarney John O’Donoghue said most of the town had been hit by “the worst flooding in a lifetime”, noting that the cleanup job would be immense. The Kerry Independent Alliance councillor stated that council crews did their utmost in difficult circumstances to quell the tide, and that water thankfully seemed to be receding from parts of the town while many other places remained submerged. In Dublin, local Green Party councillor Feljin Jose described the flooding in Cabra East as very significant and incredibly scary. Jose stated that while he did not see any houses flooded, all the roads around the church were submerged. He noted that Dublin City Council crews were pumping water and clearing drains, but added that the drains were full and there was nowhere for the water to go because much of the area has been tarmacked and concreted over. Met Éireann issued a Status Orange rain warning for Dublin warning of very heavy rain, which remained in place from 10.30pm on Thursday until it was cancelled shortly after 2am on Friday.

Met Éireann Extends Weather Warnings Across Counties

Met Éireann extended a previously issued Status Yellow rain warning to include counties Kildare and Dublin, alongside counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Cork, and Waterford. That alert warned of heavy rain with a possibility of thunderstorms and potential localised flooding, remaining in effect until 6am on Friday. Meanwhile, the UK Met Office issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for counties Antrim, Armagh, and Down until 6am, warning of possible building damage and lightning strikes. As unsettled weather continues, forecasters indicate that rain is set to return on Saturday for most of the country before clearing eastwards, followed by drier weather on Saturday night and further widespread heavy showers and a chance of thunderstorms on Sunday morning.
