Constable Jordan May, a 36-year-old Kiwi police officer originally from Christchurch, survived being shot in the leg during a domestic violence incident in Yengarie, Queensland, according to reports by 7News and Nine. The shooting occurred at approximately 5:54 pm on Friday on Horizon Court in the Fraser Coast region, after police responded to a domestic dispute. According to 7News, 45-year-old Adam O’Shea allegedly opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon immediately as officers exited their vehicle, shattering Constable May’s femur.
Colleagues Drag Officer to Safety Under Fire
Following the initial gunfire, Constable May’s colleagues dragged him 100 metres to safety while still under active fire, according to 7News reports. Officers performed emergency first aid on the injured constable under dangerous conditions, including the application of a tourniquet. The incident marked Constable May’s final shift in the region before a planned relocation west. Following the shooting, armed police swarmed the quiet farming district, ordered residents to remain inside, and cut local power supplies while specialist officers attempted to engage with the O’Shea.
Suspect Found Deceased Following Police Operation
At 9:21 pm, the property was searched. According to Nine and subsequent police updates, Adam O’Shea was found deceased inside the property. Authorities suspect the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Hospital Recovery and Union Response
Constable May is currently recovering at the RBH, where he is receiving support from his brothers, according to the Queensland Police Union Of Employees Facebook page. “I want to thank everyone involved in looking after me, from my colleagues in Maryborough to the amazing hospital staff here at the RBH,” Constable May said in a public statement. “I’m on the mend and have the support of friends and family who have not left my side.”
Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior visited the injured officer in the hospital. “As cops we know this job has risks but when it goes bad the entire police family steps up and that’s exactly what I’ve seen over the past few days,” Prior said through the union. The union emphasized that while public attention centers on the injured officer, the incredible bravery of the police who risked everything to bring him out of that situation alive must not be overlooked.
