South Korea’s Women’s Football Team Secures Victory in Asian Cup Opener

The South Korean women’s national football team has begun its campaign in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a decisive 3-0 win against Iran. The match, held in Gold Coast Stadium, Australia, saw goals from Choi Yuri, Kim Hye-ri, and Ko Yu-jin.

First-Half Dominance and Early Goal

The Korean team, ranked 21st by FIFA, took the lead in the 37th minute with a goal from Choi Yuri. The play originated from a through pass by Ji So-yeon, setting up Yuri to score her first goal in five international appearances.

Second-Half Consolidation and Additional Goals

Korea continued to press in the second half, eventually extending their lead with a penalty kick converted by Kim Hye-ri in the 59th minute. This was Kim Hye-ri’s second international goal after a 12-year wait since her debut.

The team secured their victory with a third goal in the 70th minute, scored by Ko Yu-jin with a header from a free kick delivered by Kim Hye-ri. Ko Yu-jin scored her first international goal in her seventh appearance.

Tournament Implications and Future Matches

With this win, South Korea currently leads Group A with three points, tied with Australia but ahead on goal difference. The team will next face the Philippines on March 5th and Australia on March 8th.

The AFC Women’s Asian Cup serves as a qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with the top six teams earning a spot in the global competition.
