"La Niña" Finally Arrives, but Late and Weak, Influencing US Winter Anyway

After much anticipation, "La Niña" has finally made its arrival, but it’s not quite as impactful as many had expected. The climate pattern, which typically casts a significant influence over the winter weather of the United States, is unusually weak and may not maintain its presence for long. However, even in its diluted state, it’s already leaving its mark on this winter’s weather.

Capping off an unusually warm winter that was dominated by a "super El Niño" last year, "La Niña" enters the scene late and much weaker. Both climate phenomena, in stronger forms, typically exert their most significant influence during the winter months, but this "La Niña" is already running behind schedule, according to Emily Becker, researcher at the University of Miami.

"It’s starting just as it normally would peak and start to weaken," Becker explained.

Yet, despite its late appearance and weaker form, "La Niña" continues to assert its influence on winter weather across the United States. California serves as a prime example. Typically, "La Niña" brings increased rainfall to the north of California, contrasting with the south, which tends to be drier than usual. This pattern is playing out dramatically, with the north experiencing heavy rainfall and the south grappling with intense wildfires this week.

Moreover, the Midwest has seen increased rainfall this winter, with cities such as St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati experiencing one of their wettest early-season stretches on record, as per data from the Southeast Regional Climate Center.

However, it’s not all about "La Niña." Persistent cold air outbreaks and disruptive winter storms have been the norm across the eastern two-thirds of the country since December, challenging the narrative of a typical "La Niña" winter.

Forecasters anticipate that "La Niña" will persist in its weak state until April before giving way to neutral conditions, neither "La Niña" nor "El Niño." While "La Niña" will likely continue to exert some influence on the rest of winter and the early spring, the extent of its impact remains uncertain, considering its current weakened state. As Becker puts it, if "La Niña" were stronger, she’d feel more confident in predicting a winter that aligns more closely with typical "La Niña" effects. But with the phenomenon in its current weakened state, other atmospheric factors may take center stage.
