The Lahore Ring Road Authority has implemented a 16.67% increase in toll tax rates for the Northern and Southern loops, and the Eastern bypass. The new rates, which took effect earlier this week, apply to a range of vehicle types.

Increased Toll Rates

The toll for cars and jeeps has increased from Rs. 60 to Rs. 70. Owners of Hiace and wagons will now pay Rs. 140, a rise from the previous Rs. 120. Minibuses and coasters face a toll of Rs. 140, up from Rs. 120. Bus tolls have increased from Rs. 300 to Rs. 350.

Heavier vehicles are also subject to the increased rates. Loader trucks, dumpers, and pickups with 2-3 axles will now be charged Rs. 420, compared to the previous Rs. 360. Trucks and trailers with more than three axles will see their toll rise to Rs. 700 from Rs. 600.

Did You Know? Ambulances, defense vehicles, and vehicles used by the Presidency are among those specifically exempted from these toll charges.

A number of vehicles are exempt from the toll, including ambulances, defense vehicles, and those displaying flags. Official vehicles of the Authority, police vehicles, and funeral vans are also exempt. Vehicles associated with the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, Governor House, Chief Minister’s Secretariat, and foreign dignitaries on official state visits to Pakistan will not be required to pay the toll. Vehicles deputed for essential services are also included in the exemption list.

Expert Insight: Toll increases are often implemented to fund ongoing maintenance and potential expansion projects for vital infrastructure like ring roads. These adjustments can impact transportation costs for both individuals and businesses, potentially influencing logistical decisions.

It is possible that these increased revenues will be allocated to improvements on the Lahore Ring Road system. Further adjustments to toll rates could occur in the future, depending on traffic volume, maintenance needs, and broader economic factors. The Authority may also consider public feedback as it evaluates the impact of these changes.
