This weekend marks the inaugural presentation of the Latvian Art Award in ten categories. The Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing sustained and impactful contributions to Latvia’s art ecosystem, will be presented to art historian and curator Irēna Bužinska.
Bužinska’s interest in art history began in her youth, inspired by a teacher. She later studied at the Latvian Academy of Arts and dedicated over 30 years to the Latvian National Museum of Art. Currently, she focuses on curating exhibitions.
“There are many of us art historians, on the one hand. But those who continue – finishing the academy is one thing, but continuing in a museum or gallery is a shockingly small number of people,” Bužinska revealed.
Bužinska was interviewed at the Ogre History and Art Museum, where her latest curated exhibition is on display. She believes that successful exhibitions are rooted in research and the ability to present art accessibly: “We appreciate what is most valuable to us. Let today’s artists not think that everything begins only with them and from them.”
Bužinska emphasized the importance of objectivity in art, stating, “Both art history, and critics and researchers are more objective in this regard… Every concept you use, you must be able to explain it without paper and without a dictionary.”
Her interests consistently lie in phenomena and events in art history that have been forgotten or misunderstood due to political circumstances or changing tastes. She noted, “We see our design history. Our mass design history is anonymous. We know nothing about the factory, let alone the author!”
The exhibition “The Hat Queen and Her Batiks” showcases the work of Ārija Skudra, a hat designer who worked at the “Rīgas Filcs” factory. Her designs became benchmarks for solid taste and quality, showcased at the Riga Model House and other fashion shows in Latvia and internationally. The exhibition also features Skudra’s batik paintings.
The Latvian Art Award Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented this weekend, on April 18th, in Valmiera.
