Tragic Shooting at Rest Area on Tol Tangerang-Merak: Boss Rental Car Shot Dead After Asking for Toilet Location

TANGERANG, KOMPAS.com – A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday (1/1/2025) at the Rest Area KM 45 on the Tangerang-Merak toll road. A boss of a rental car service, Ilyas Abdurrahman (48), was shot dead after a suspect asked for the location of the toilet in a minimarket.

"A suspect came into the minimarket and asked for the toilet. I told him there wasn’t one, so I showed him where the toilet was outside," said Ahmad, an employee of the minimarket who witnessed the event on Friday (3/1/2025).

After learning that there was no toilet in the minimarket, the suspect left. The situation seemed calm for a while, but suddenly Ahmad heard a commotion outside.

"After a short while, there was a commotion, and then the shooting started," Ahmad recounted.

The shooting resulted in Ilyas being severely injured and running back into the minimarket to seek shelter. "One of the people shot was brought into the minimarket. There was a lot of blood," Ahmad said.

The incident began the day before when the suspect rented a Honda Brio from Ilyas’s rental service. The GPS device on the car was later found to be broken.

Agam Muhammad (26), Ilyas’s son, explained that they used the car’s GPS to track down the vehicle, which led them to Pandeglang. There, the suspect pointed a gun at them and claimed to be a member of the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL).

Upon arriving at the rest area, Ilyas and his team successfully surrounded the suspect. However, the suspect’s accomplice arrived with another gun, and a shootout ensued. Four to five shots were fired, and Ilyas was hit and killed.

In related news, the Tangerang Police are currently investigating the case and have seized the suspect’s weapon. The police also thanked Ilyas’s team for their cooperation in the investigation.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the potential dangers that can occur on toll roads.
