Headline: Kaunas Extends Free Public Transport for Ukrainian Refugees for Another Year
In a compassionate move, the city of Kaunas, Lithuania, has decided to prolong the complimentary access to its public transportation system for Ukrainian refugees, a gesture that was initially introduced following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This extension will provide relief to thousands of people who had to flee their homes, ensuring they have a cost-effective way to navigate the city.
The Kaunas City Council has decreed that Ukrainian refugees will continue to enjoy a 99% discount on the purchase of an unlimited electronic transit pass, valid for a full year. To claim this benefit, individuals simply need to present their digital temporary residence permit issued by the Department of Migration, along with a valid personal ID.
This decision by Kaunas follows a similar trend among other major Lithuanian cities, demonstrating a collective commitment to supporting Ukrainian refugees in their time of need. Comparatively, in Finland, nearly 12,000 Ukrainians have filed applications for temporary protection since the start of 2024, marking a slight decrease from the previous year.
Meanwhile, the Czech Republic has also shown its dedication to aiding Ukrainian refugees. On December 19, the Czech parliament approved the seventh iteration of the ‘Lex Ukrajina’ law, enabling the continuation of temporary protection for the approximately 380,000 Ukrainians currently residing in the country.
As the international community continues to watch the situation in Ukraine unfold, such initiatives serve as a beacon of hope and assistance to those affected by the conflict, proving that solidarity knows no bounds.
