London Firefighters Respond to Major Incidents in Walthamstow and Walworth

London Fire Brigade (LFB) crews have been deployed to two significant, separate fire incidents in the capital, with emergency teams working to contain blazes in both Walthamstow and Walworth. While both incidents caused significant disruption and prompted evacuations, officials have confirmed there are no reports of injuries in either case.

Extensive Walthamstow Incident Affects Homes and Railway

In Walthamstow, east London, approximately 125 firefighters were mobilized to tackle a fire that impacted a range of residential properties and infrastructure. The London Fire Brigade reported receiving more than 100 emergency calls regarding the incident near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street, with the first alert coming in just before 18:30 BST.

Assistant commissioner Tom Goodall stated that the fire resulted in one house being set ablaze, while a second home sustained damage to its rear extension. Additionally, the gardens of 30 properties were affected by the fire, which also spread to a nearby railway embankment. The blaze was brought under control by 22:35.

Local residents have faced significant disruption. Two rest centres were established to assist those impacted, and Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy noted on social media that “hundreds” of people were affected by the event. She expressed gratitude to the community for their contributions of food and water to the rest centres.

The incident led to the partial closure of the Weaver Overground line, with transport officials warning that disruption was expected to continue into the following morning. Authorities had advised members of the public to avoid the area—specifically Wood Street, Shernhall Street, and surrounding roads—due to road closures and the significant volume of smoke produced by the fire. Residents in the vicinity were urged to keep their windows and doors closed.

Walworth Motorcycle Shop Destroyed by Early Morning Blaze

Earlier on Sunday, emergency crews responded to a separate, severe fire at a motorcycle shop on Camberwell Road in Walworth, south London. The Brigade received the first of 28 calls at 04:38, leading to the mobilization of eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters from stations including Peckham, Old Kent Road, and Brixton.

At the height of the blaze, the ground floor of the shop was alight, leaving the premises gutted. As a precautionary measure, firefighters evacuated approximately 30 people from two nearby properties. To combat the flames, crews utilized one of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders to fight the fire from above, while a drone team provided the Incident Commander with an aerial perspective of the scene.

The fire was brought under control by 07:09. Camberwell Road remained closed throughout Sunday between Grosvenor Terrace and Bethwin Road, with the public urged to avoid the vicinity while emergency operations were ongoing.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

The London Fire Brigade has confirmed that the causes of both the Walthamstow and Walworth fires remain under investigation. While the immediate danger has been mitigated in both locations, the scale of the responses highlights the significant resources required to manage such incidents.
