In a viral Instagram story, popular travel influencer Luisito Comunica exposed a shocking case of excessive taxi fare at Cancún International Airport, describing the scene as a "mafia of taxis" and urging authorities to address the issue.

On a recent trip to Cancún, Luisito chemicals on his Twitter and Instagram accounts about his puzzling experience. He shared that he was charged MXN 2,000 (USD 100) for a mere 20-minute ride from the airport to his destination. This astronomical fare was not only more than twice the usual price but also came with a poor service— a compact Sentra car instead of the usual larger vehicles.

Despite the excessive fare, the influencer was not charged by the driver but by "the bosses or concessionaires of the taxis" operating at the airport. In his videos, Luisito emphasized that his complaint was not targeted at the driver but at the system that allows such exorbitant fees.

Adding insult to injury, a sign inside the taxi witlessly asked passengers to give a tip to the driver after being overcharged. Luisito Communica expressed his outrage, commenting, "After robbing you of 2,000 pesos (100 dollars), they still have the nerve to ask for a tip for their drivers… They’re nothing but rats!"

Moreover, the payment system obliges passengers to pay in cash without providing a receipt for the service—which Luisito also revealed in another video.

This incident is just the latest in a series of controversies involving Cancún’s taxi drivers. Both the ‘Andrés Quintana Roo’ syndicate and concessionaires operating at the airport have faced similar complaints from tourists. In response to these notorious incidents, local entrepreneurs and authorities are preparing a campaign to raise awareness and prevent such abuses, which tarnish the destination’s image.

Cancún residents and social media users have since flooded Luisito Communica’s posts with comments supporting his stance, urging authorities to take immediate action against the predatory practices of Cancún’s taxi drivers.
