Belarus Leader Ukraine-Russia Talks”>Alexander Lukashenko: ‘Better Our Dictatorship Than Ukraine’s Democracy’
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, in a циничный statement during the Christmas holidays, has compared the dictatorship in Belarus to the democracy in Ukraine, suggesting that his country’s system of governance is preferable. Lukashenko, who continues to refuse to recognize his country’s democratic opposition, has claimed that Belarus’ authoritarian rule prevents deep crises and ensures stability.
In a statement reported by Belarusian state-run media, Lukashenko sparked controversy by asserting that, "It is better to have such a dictatorship as in Belarus than such a democracy as in Ukraine." He expressed his belief that, despite external challenges, Belarus has managed to maintain peace and avoid major unrest due to its authoritarian system.
Criticizing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Lukashenko argued that Zelensky’s policies are escalating the conflict in Ukraine and could potentially draw Belarus into the war. "If we are drawn into the war, it will be a heavy situation. Our state may not withstand it. Therefore, we must endure patiently, steadfastly, just as the Lord and the church teach us. We must do our job. Time will set everything right and give each his due," Lukashenko stated.
Lukashenko further touched on the theme of "injustice," which he views as one of the primary causes of war. He contended that the lack of fairness in society fuels social unrest and conflicts, and asserted that Ukraine’s crisis began not with the Maidan protests, but rather with the oppressive oligarchic system that led to the country’s demise.
Recall that in a podcast interview with Lex Friedman, President Zelensky revealed that Lukashenko had asked for forgiveness after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with Lukashenko stating that Russia was using his territory without his consent. However, Belarus subsequently denied this, with Lukashenko’s press secretary, NataliaEkismont, dismissing Zelensky’s claims and asserting that no apology was ever offered.
