Swedish singer Lykke Li released the new single “Lucky Again” tonight, February 13, as a preview of her upcoming album, The Afterparty, scheduled for release on May 8 (Neon Gold/Futures✦). The album marks Lykke Li’s first full-length project in four years.
New Album Details
The Afterparty is a nine-song, 24-minute project written in Los Angeles and recorded in Stockholm. The recording process involved a 17-piece string orchestra and a significant amount of flute instrumentation.
Lykke Li describes the song as representing “samsara,” or the wheel of life, encompassing themes of winning, losing, and the desire to reclaim past experiences. She noted, “I always said I wanted the Vivaldi song at my wedding or funeral but I think this is giving more revenge heist energy.”
Exploring New Artistic Territory
Throughout The Afterparty, Lykke Li embodies an alter-ego she terms “Ram Dass for fuckboys.” She characterizes the album as a departure from previous work, focusing on “your lower self: your need for revenge, your shame, despair, all of it,” rather than focusing on a “higher self.”
The artist stated she was “twirling around in love addiction for all those albums” and is now entering an “existential era.”
Return to the Stage
After a hiatus from performing since April 2023, Lykke Li is scheduled to return to the stage on April 10 at Coachella in Indio, California. Additional performances are planned for May 22 in Rio de Janeiro, June 19 at Prague’s Metronome Festival, July 5 with Wolf Alice at London’s Finsbury Park, July 10 as a headliner at the Pohoda Festival in Slovakia, and September 19 as an opening act for Robyn in Mexico City.
