title: Macri Moves to Safeguard Pro‘s Political Fort in Buenos Aires

Meta Description: In a bid to preserve the Republican’s main stronghold, Jorge Macri plans to decouple Buenos Aires’ elections from national legislatives and suspend primary elections.

The plataforma Pro’s local leader, Jorge Macri, is aiming to regain political initiative and defend the Republic’s main bastion from La Libertad Avanza (LLA) threats. Following public spat between Javier Milei and Mauricio Macri regarding the conditions for an alliance ahead of the 2025 elections, Macri plans to descouple Buenos Aires’ elections from the national legislative elections and suspend primary elections.

In an interview with LA NACION, pillar Ramírez of LLA expressed her skepticism about Macri’s intentions, describing the idea as "a funny odor." Despite suspicions, Macri’s closest advisors insist that the city leader possesses the authority to decide whether to hold simultaneous or separate elections.

The chief of government aims to hold elections on the first days of July, before the winter holidays, while initiating negotiations to secure a majority of 40 votes in the city legislature to pass the elections suspension.

Macri’s team also plans to present a bill to eliminate primaries entirely. However, LLA representatives suggest that Macri’s move is merely a desperate attempt to maintain power in the face of Milei’s growing influence.

As Macri prepares to defend Pro’s political turf, he’s also looking to strengthen the party’s inner circle. He recently appointed Laura Alonso, the former chief of the Office Against Corruption, as the new spokesperson for the city government. Additionally, former Lanús mayor Néstor Grindetti is set to assume the newly created position of Secretary of Strategic Policy, charged with liaising with LLA and the national government.

Macri also plans to restructure his cabinet, with Valentín Díaz Gilligan expected to take over the Ministry of Economic Development. Pro members remain confident that they can overcome the challenges posed by LLA, with one operatory declaring, "We must put things in black and white and strengthen ourselves; they’re coming for the power in the city."

In a clear sign of their resolve, Pro’s youth militias recently adopted a new chant: "Bring Karina to Capital to see that the porteño doesn’t change his mind with Jorge, and Mauricio, we’re going to win!"

In a move to consolidate power and protect Pro’s political stronghold, Jorge Macri is planning to decouple Buenos Aires’ elections from national legislatives and suspend primary elections. Pro members remain confident in their ability to defend their political turf, despite the growing influence of La Libertad Avanza (LLA) and ongoing negotiations between Javier Milei and Mauricio Macri regarding an electoral alliance.
