Macron Urges Realistic Territorial Discussions in Ukraine; Warns Against Compromise Out of War Fatigue
French President Emmanuel Macron, addressing French ambassadors at their annual meeting, encouraged Ukrainians to engage in realistic discussions regarding territorial issues. He believed that only Ukrainians could effectively lead these negotiations to resolve the conflict sparked by Russia‘s invasion in 2022.
Macron urged the United States, under the leadership of newly inaugurated President Donald Trump, to aid in altering the situation and persuading Russia to engage in peace talks. Simultaneously, he stressed that Europeans must prioritize building security guarantees for Ukraine.
Despite Trump’s promises, Macron cautioned against expecting a swift and easy resolution in Ukraine, stating, "There will be no quick and easy solution in Ukraine under current conditions." He asserted that a Ukrainian defeat would not benefit Europeans or Americans, warning that capitulation would undermine trust in the West, especially if it resulted from war fatigue.
Earlier, Trump had expressed his intention to broker a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia within his first 24 hours in office. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyszínűxpressed skepticism, arguing that Russian President Vladimir Putin has demonstrated no interest in talks and would only engage if his conditions were met.
As the international community grapples with the ongoing conflict and its implications, Macron’s call for realism and steadfast commitment to Ukrainian security serves as a stark reminder of the challenges ahead in finding a sustainable resolution to the crisis.
