Karachi – A fully electric car manufactured in Pakistan, priced around Rs1 million, could be available as early as June, according to Hammad Mansoor, Chief Executive of the Engineering Development Board (EDB). The announcement comes amidst already elevated prices for vehicles of all types in the country.
Potential Shift in Pakistan’s Auto Industry
Mansoor as well indicated a possible reduction in vehicle taxes in the upcoming federal budget, potentially making hybrid, electric and fuel-powered vehicles more accessible to consumers. He stated that the long-held dominance of a few major automobile companies in Pakistan is coming to an end.
The EDB chief executive suggested that increased competition from new manufacturers and greater localisation of parts could lead to a decrease in car prices by as much as Rs2.5 million. He noted that approximately 74 percent of battery components are expected to be produced locally, lowering the cost of electric vehicles.
Currently, locally developed electric vehicles are projected to have a range of around 180 kilometers on a single charge, with some advanced models potentially reaching up to 1,200 kilometers.
