Magura V5 Drones: Has Russian Tactics Shifted Post-Helicopter Losses?

Ukraine Reports Decline in Russian Air Strikes; Black Sea Remains a Concern

Ukrainian military sources indicate a slight decrease in Russian aircraft sorties, but the Black Sea region continues to pose challenges for Ukrainian forces.

In a recent update, Ukrainian Navy spokesman Lieutenant Commander Dmitry Pletenchuk shared that there has been a slight reduction in the number of Russian air sorties following the successful use of Magura V5 drones to destroy enemy helicopters. However, he underscored that the presence of Russian aviation in the Black Sea region remains a significant problem for Ukraine.

"While there has been a decrease in the number of sorties, the Russians are still heavily using helicopters for anti-drone operations," said Pletenchuk in a telethon session. "Their main task is to patrol, detect, and destroys our marine drones. They haven’t abandoned this practice yet."

He explained that the Russian military tends to fully understand changed situations only after precise strikes by Ukrainian forces.

"At the moment, the picture isn’t significantly changing, but I hope it will eventually in the context of Russian aviation activity in the Black Sea," Pletenchuk said. "It’s indeed a challenge for us, as Russia retains dominance in the airspace around Crimea and the eastern part of the Black Sea, including tactical aviation."

Meanwhile, the spokesman also mentioned that the occupational forces near the Crimean Bridge are continuing to repair the protective barrier damaged by recent storms.

Separately, on December 31, 2024, Ukraine’s military intelligence (GUR) historically became the first to destroy an enemy aircraft using an attack drone, Magura V5, while operating in the Black Sea. Two Russian Mi-8 helicopters were either destroyed or badly damaged, marking a significant loss for the enemy.

It is hypothesized that the Russian military may need to adjust its tactics in response to these actions. While Russia possesses a large inventory of Mi-8 helicopters, each destroyed aircraft represents a loss of trained crew members.
