Actor Mahershala Ali has officially confirmed that his long-gestating Marvel Studios project, Blade, is dead, stating in a recent GQ interview that he has moved on from the troubled production. Announced initially at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, the vampire hunter reboot spent seven years navigating script rewrites and director departures before ultimately collapsing, leaving Ali to pursue original work instead.
Mahershala Ali Confirms Blade Reboot Is Dead
According to his interview with GQ, Ali explained that if Marvel Studios ever produces a Blade film, it will not feature him in the title role. “The best way I can answer this question is, when I look at what is for me, is it was either this or that — and I’ll take this,” Ali told GQ, referencing his new movie, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. He added that after pushing 30 years in his professional career, what is meant for him remains for him, and that specific project is not it.
“You had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie,” Ali said, according to GQ. He noted that the collapse of the Marvel project allowed director Bassam Tariq the time and focus to write and approach him with Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Tariq had originally been slated to helm Blade before stepping down from the director’s chair in 2022.
Did you know? While Mahershala Ali’s Blade never made it in front of cameras, supporting wardrobe pieces created for the production were eventually sold on and used in Ryan Coogler’s period vampire film, Sinners.
Kevin Feige and Cast Reactions to the Collapse
The shelving of the reboot follows public admissions from studio leadership regarding the project’s troubled development. Earlier this month, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige admitted to GQ that he felt like a “gigantic loser and failure” over the collapse of the reboot.
Feige previously acknowledged that the studio struggled to land on a definitive era, cycling through “three or four” different script incarnations, including a pair of period pieces. “We didn’t feel confident that we could do that on Blade, and we didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us,” Feige said.
Actor Mia Goth, who was previously attached to the project, detailed how close production came to starting. Speaking on the Josh Horowitz podcast in December, Goth described flying to Atlanta to complete a chemistry test with Ali alongside a costume and wig fitting for a 1920s-set version of the film before the creative direction was scrapped.
History of Development Hell and Previous Star Responses
The troubled production history invited commentary from figures connected to the original film franchise. Wesley Snipes, who originally played the vampire hunter in the original Blade trilogy, returned for a cameo appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Commenting on the ongoing delays via social media in 2024 after director Yann Demange reportedly exited the project, Snipes wrote, “Blade, lordylordylordy folks still lookin for the secret sauce, ridin snowmobiles in traffic, kinda rough. Daywalkers make it look easy, don’t they?”
David S. Goyer, who wrote all three films in the original trilogy and directed 2004’s Blade: Trinity, expressed confusion over the delays in May of last year. “I’ve always loved the character and I love him. I’ve been sitting on the sidelines wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?'” Goyer stated.
