Maine Democratic Senate Candidate Graham Platner Withdraws After Sexual Assault Allegations

Maine Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing intense pressure to end his campaign following a public sexual assault allegation, leaving the party scrambling to find a replacement for one of its most competitive races.

The controversy centers on an account provided by 41-year-old Maine resident Jenny Racicot, who dated Platner on-and-off approximately five years ago. In a report published by Politico, Racicot alleged that Platner arrived at her home uninvited and intoxicated one night in 2021, where he allegedly forced himself upon her on a couch. Racicot stated she repeatedly told Platner to stop and described him as being “really forceful” with her. She further alleged that Platner followed her into her bedroom and engaged in sexual activity against her will.

Racicot, who later recounted her experience in a CNN interview, stated that the incident was something she had attempted to forget for several years. According to Politico, messages between Racicot and others, including conversations with her therapist, appeared to corroborate her claims. Additionally, an anonymous man whom Racicot dated in 2023 told Politico that she had disclosed the alleged assault to him at that time, providing details that matched her recent public account.

Progressive Support Collapses

Following the publication of the allegations, a wave of prominent progressive figures and party organizations moved to distance themselves from the candidate. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., whose early endorsement was instrumental in Platner securing the Democratic nomination, issued a statement Tuesday calling on the candidate to step aside. Sanders noted that he had spoken with Platner regarding the “best path forward for Maine” and concluded that the allegations were “very serious.”

Other high-profile supporters, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., rescinded their endorsements. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose top aides had been working on the campaign, stated that ending the candidacy was the “only appropriate response.” Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., also revoked her support. Both the Senate Democratic campaign arm and the Maine Democratic Party have formally called for Platner to withdraw.

Platner, a U.S. military veteran and oyster farmer, characterized the allegations as “serious, troubling and false” in a video statement posted to X. He indicated that his campaign was “taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.”

The withdrawal of Platner, a first-time candidate who ran uncontested in the primary after Governor Janet Mills ended her own campaign in April, highlights ongoing concerns regarding Democratic recruitment and vetting processes. The Maine Senate race is considered one of the Democrats’ best opportunities to flip a seat currently held by Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Maine is noted as the only state won by Kamala Harris in the most recent election that is currently represented by a Republican senator. One individual, Lyndsy Fifield, alleged that Platner was physically rough with her while drinking, though Platner denied those claims. Fifield also alleged that Platner was aware that a tattoo he previously had on his chest was a Nazi symbol, despite his public denials. Additionally, Racicot had previously described her experience with Platner in 2021 to The New York Times as “unsettling” and “reckless,” though she declined to provide further details at that time.
