Malaysians Favor Short Domestic Getaways and Experiential Travel

Malaysians planning upcoming long weekends are driving a sharp surge in domestic holiday bookings, prioritizing short regional escapes and experience-led travel despite rising cost-of-living pressures, according to recent platform data.

Merdeka Holiday Triggers Domestic Travel Spike Across Malaysia

The upcoming Merdeka Day break is prompting many Malaysians to extend a standard three-day weekend by taking extra leave before or after the holiday. Data released by Agoda shows a notable jump in accommodation searches for stays between August 22 and September 7 compared to the same timeframe last year. Stays in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Langkawi, Kedah, and Kuantan, Pahang, lead platform searches. According to Agoda, searches for Kota Kinabalu and Langkawi rose by 53% and 69% respectively. Kuantan recorded the most prominent search growth among major hubs, climbing 2.8 times over figures from 2025.

“Travellers are becoming more intentional with the time they have,” said Fabian Teja, country director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda, in a press statement. Teja noted that instead of waiting for extended holidays, travellers are planning trips around school breaks and long weekends while seeking rewarding experiences in familiar spots and newly rediscovered destinations.

Smaller Cities See 3.6 Times Search Increases

Beyond the top three searched locations, secondary destinations across Malaysia are registering substantial gains in travel interest. Accommodation searches for Kota Baru, Kelantan, surged roughly 3.6 times compared to last year. Miri, Sarawak, followed with a 2.4 times increase, while Johor Baru, Johor, saw a 2.3 times bump. Ipoh, Perak, recorded a 2.1 times rise, and Kuching, Sarawak, doubled its search volume, reflecting a broader shift toward easier-to-plan domestic short breaks.

This behavior aligns with findings from the Klook Travel Pulse 2026 (2H Edition) report, which highlights a broader shift toward intentional planning and spending among local travelers. Half of surveyed Malaysian travelers (50%) are booking earlier to dodge peak-season price hikes and lock in better rates. Additionally, one-third of travelers who took fewer trips over the preceding six months spent extra time selecting itineraries that best matched their preferences.

Deal-Seeking Rates Hit Highs Amid APAC Inflation

Higher travel costs driven by rising fuel prices and broader economic pressures across the Asia-Pacific region have not dampened overall leisure confidence. According to Klook data, nearly half (45%) of Malaysian travelers remain confident about leisure travel through the second half of 2026. Rather than canceling trips, 69% of travelers are dropping strict destination loyalty in favor of better overall value and unique experiences.

Malaysia currently records the highest deal-seeking rate in Southeast Asia at 55%, outpacing regional counterparts such as Thailand at 51%, Singapore at 47%, and Indonesia at 35%. “Cost pressures across APAC this year were real. It did change how people travelled, just not in the way you might expect,” said Marcus Yong, vice president of global marketing at Klook, in a press statement. Yong added that travelers responded by planning more carefully rather than cutting back entirely, demonstrating an unwillingness to compromise on experiences.

AI Adoption Rises Alongside Demand for Verified Reviews

Artificial intelligence tools are increasingly shaping how Malaysians discover local destinations, transport routes, and off-the-beaten-path attractions. Survey data shows that over half (53%) of Malaysian travelers use AI to navigate real-time logistics and uncover hidden gems. Furthermore, 40% rely on AI for on-trip assistance such as instant translation and itinerary adjustments, 37% use it to unearth unique local spots, and 36% check transport routes.

Despite the growing reliance on algorithms, human validation remains critical to consumer trust. Three in five travelers (60%) require verified reviews on trusted platforms before completing a checkout. Only 30% place direct trust in AI-generated suggestions, with half of all travelers (50%) preferring official tourism boards or physical guidebooks to finalize their travel plans.
