eping Up Security Measures on Mallorca‘s Beaches
Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is stepping up its security efforts to combat rising theft incidents on its popular beaches. Local authorities in the town of Alcudia have decided to install 30 cameras throughout the city, with a particular focus on the three-kilometer-long main beach (Playa de Alcudia).
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports that the cameras will be set up at access points along the beach and are expected to be operational by next year’s tourist season. They will also be installed at major roads, intersections, and other strategic points around the city.
Alarming Increase in Thefts
This security initiative comes in response to an increase in theft reports, according to local police. Tourists have been victims of theft while sunbathing, swimming, or walking along the beach and promenade. Items such as bags, wallets, mobile phones, and other valuables have been targeted.
Large-Scale Operation to Combat Crime
Earlier this summer, a large-scale operation was launched across Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza to tackle rising crime rates. National police were deployed to assist local forces during this operation.
Over 260 individuals were apprehended while attempting to steal from tourists on Playa de Palma alone, the Majorca Daily Bulletin reports. The operation is set to continue until the end of October, dependent on the success and necessity of the initiative.
