Man Faces Nearly 70 Charges Over Alleged Attacks on Three Women

by Rachel Morgan News Editor

BRUCE, ACT — A 36-year-old Bruce man has been denied bail after facing the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday, 5 June, following his arrest on nearly 70 charges involving alleged sexual and violent offences against three women.

The arrest followed an investigation by the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Team, which executed a search warrant at a residence in Bruce on Thursday, 4 June. According to ACT Policing, the charges stem from alleged incidents occurring between 2023 and November 2025. The 69 counts include multiple charges of sexual intercourse without consent, aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated choke and render a person insensible, and aggravated common assault.

The Court Proceedings

During the bail hearing, the prosecution opposed the release of the accused, highlighting a pattern of behavior that they argued showed a “complete disregard for the safety of the complainants.” The court heard that some of the alleged incidents took place at the workplace of one of the victims. Prosecutors also presented photographs that appeared to show bruising and scratches on one of the alleged victims as evidence for their opposition.

The defense argued that the accused’s criminal history was unrelated to the current allegations and that he had family support in the ACT. His counsel suggested that strict bail conditions—including living with a family member and avoiding contact with the complainants—would be sufficient to mitigate concerns regarding reoffending or witness interference. The defense also noted that the allegations were “dated,” with the most recent incident occurring in November 2025, and suggested that the legal process could face a years-long delay.

Magistrate Alexandra Burt ultimately refused bail, characterizing the charges as “serious allegations” that represented a “callous disregard for the wishes and safety” of the three complainants. She further described the man’s alleged actions as a “persistent and flagrant disregard” for the physical safety of the women involved, categorizing the conduct as an “abuse of power.”

Significance and Next Steps

The case highlights the ongoing challenges within the justice system regarding the prosecution of domestic and sexual violence. The refusal of bail underscores the court’s focus on the safety of complainants when faced with allegations of repeated and severe violence. With no pleas entered, the accused is expected to return to court on 6 July. Future proceedings will likely focus on the evidentiary weight of the photographs and the testimony of the three women, as the legal process moves toward an eventual trial.
