A 44-year-ancient man is dead following an exchange of gunfire with police in Mississauga early Saturday morning, following what investigators say began as a domestic-related call.
Details of the Incident
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), police were initially contacted at approximately 12:30 a.m. By a woman reporting a domestic incident. She stated her husband had left their home with a firearm in the area of Perran Drive and Paula Court.
Officers located the man on Fifth Line West, and an exchange of gunfire ensued. Four officers discharged their firearms, striking the man multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation Underway
The SIU has invoked its mandate and is leading the investigation. Five SIU investigators and three forensic investigators are currently assigned to the case. Investigators will review body-worn camera footage from police, in-car camera footage, and any available footage from homes in the area.
Peel police Constable Tyler Bell-Morena stated that the man had a prior history, but declined to elaborate. He also confirmed that the man was not authorized to possess firearms and that multiple firearms were recovered at the scene.
