Man Critical After Random Push Into Path of NYC Subway Train
In a harrowing incident, a man is fighting for his life after being impulsively shoved onto the tracks and struck by an incoming train at a Manhattan subway station on Tuesday afternoon. The New York City Police Department has confirmed the attack, labeling it as a random, unprovoked assault.
The incident unfolded around 1:30 PM local time at the 18th Street station along the 1 line. As the train approached the platform, a hooded suspect, wearing a face covering, approached the unsuspecting victim from behind. Without warning, he pushed the man onto the tracks, surveillance footage reveals, before fleeing the scene.
This latest attack comes barely a week after another shocking crime in a Brooklyn subway station. In that instance, a man was caught on camera setting a homeless woman on fire as she slept, surrounding by her belongings. The victim, later identified as 57-year-old Debrina Kawam of Toms River, New Jersey, succumbed to her injuries.
NYC Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that Kawam had briefly been part of the city’s homeless service system. Her attacker, 33-year-old Sebastian Zapata, was swiftly apprehended and charged with murder and arson.
Authorities expressed their gratitude to the community for their assistance in identifying the victim and urged anyone with information about the latest incident to come forward. They reminded the public that staying alert and reporting suspicious behavior is paramount to maintaining the city’s safety.
