Hospitals and emergency services were inundated with casualties on Friday morning as thousands struggled with slick roads, leading to a wave of falls, fractures, and head injuries, with bicycles being the primary culprit.
The Jeroen Bosch Hospital in ‘s-Hertogenbosch reported a flurry of admissions, with nine patients pouring in at the crack of dawn, many of whom had slipped while cycling. A spokesperson confirmed a mix of single fractures, a dislocated hip, and a head wound among the injured. By mid-afternoon, the patient count had swelled to 26.
"Most were cycling accidents," the spokesperson said, adding, "It’s primarily been fractures to the wrist, ankle, or shoulder, with a few head wounds and concussions."
The Elisabeth-TweeSteden Hospital in Tilburg witnessed an influx of 27 patients throughout the day, grappling with injuries stemming from icy road conditions.
Meanwhile, police services logged a "considerable" number of call-outs involving fallen cyclists and skid-out cars, with icy roads being the overwhelming factor in these incidents.
However, the Amphia Hospital in Breda fared better, with a spokesperson attributing the increased emergency room visits to general illness rather than road-related accidents.
As the winter’s chill holds tight, it serves as a stark reminder for all to exercise vigilance while navigating treacherous road conditions.
