Title: Tragedy at Bulgaria’s Schengen Border: Three Minors Lose Their Lives
In the wake of Bulgaria’s integration into the Schengen Zone, the country and the EU are celebrating, but a grim reminder of the migrant crisis has emerged on Bulgaria’s southern border with Turkey. Three minors lost their lives in the Stranda Forest, just days after Christmas.
The victims, both from Egypt and minors, were found dead after spending a night exposed to the elements. Despite receiving distress signals, neither volunteers nor border police reached them in time. Two of the deceased were reportedly identified through DNA testing on Monday. The families of the victims have started to arrive from Egypt to claim their loved ones.
The Relentless Plight of Migrant Children
This tragic incident is, unfortunately, part of a larger pattern. Diana Dimitrova, from the "Mission Wings" NGO, reported that the number of signals received for missing or deceased migrants, particularly children, has been on the rise. In 2023 alone, over 100 such signals were received, and already this year, more than 350 have been reported.
Activists trabajando in Bulgaria share similar concerns. One unidentified woman, having worked on various European borders, recounted the harsh realities faced by migrants and the lack of adequate response from authorities. Meanwhile, Sebastian, an activist from the Netherlands, recounted being harassed and threatened by Bulgarian border officials while attempting to aid migrants.
Systematic Failures and Repression
Dimitrova from "Mission Wings" also revealed systematic failures and repression by Bulgarian authorities. She reported numerous incidents of migrants being stripped naked, assaulted, and robbed of their belongings by border officials. She also noted that NGOs are subject to repression and lack of oversight, with Bulgaria’s "National Security Agency" (DANS) and "Border Police" acting with impunity.
The Schengen Zone, aimed at enhancing Europe‘s security and freedom, must also prioritize the protection and well-being of vulnerable individuals, including migrant children. This heinous incident serves as a stark reminder that the migrant crisis remains far from over and requires vigilance and comprehensive solutions.
