Marvel Comics Moving Publishing Division to Burbank as Stephen Wacker Named EIC

Consolidation at the Burbank Studio Lot

Marvel Comics will relocate its publishing division from New York City to The Walt Disney Company’s Burbank, California, headquarters by July 2027. The move, announced to staff this week, coincides with the appointment of Stephen Wacker as Editor-in-Chief, as Marvel seeks to consolidate its creative teams under one roof.

After nearly 90 years of operations in New York City, Marvel Comics is moving its base of operations to the West Coast. The decision was shared with employees during a town hall meeting at the company’s Midtown Manhattan office on Thursday. The relocation will place the publishing arm alongside Marvel Studios and corporate parent Disney on the studio lot in Burbank, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The move follows a feasibility assessment conducted after new leadership for the comics and franchise division arrived in May. With the current New York office lease set to expire next year, executives determined that bringing all facets of the brand—film, television, and publishing—into one location would foster better collaboration. As Yahoo reported, this marks the first time that all of Marvel’s businesses are together in one city, something that had not occurred since before Disney bought the company in 2009.

Leadership Transition: Stephen Wacker Named Editor-in-Chief

Alongside the relocation news, Marvel announced a shift in its editorial hierarchy. Veteran editor Stephen Wacker has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics. Wacker, who previously spent more than 15 years at the company, is credited with overseeing influential modern comic runs, including the “Superior Spider-Man” era and the relaunch of “Captain Marvel.”

Wacker replaces C.B. Cebulski, who has served as Editor-in-Chief since 2017. Marvel stated that Cebulski will remain with the company, transitioning to a new role based in Japan to oversee “Asia Originals,” including manga partnerships. Wacker will report to Brad Winderbaum, Head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise.

Impact on New York-Based Staff

The transition affects just over 100 employees currently based in New York. While the company is inviting these staff members to relocate to California, the geographic shift represents a significant change for a company historically synonymous with Manhattan. Bleeding Cool News noted that orientation sessions for employees and their families are scheduled to begin next week.

Marvel Comics Publishing Division Shake Up

“New York has played a huge part in who Marvel is as a company, and in the pages of our comics. While our network of writers and artists is now an international operation, New York is still woven into our DNA and that will never change. Our colleagues in New York have helped shape generations of stories and characters, and their contributions to Marvel’s legacy cannot be overstated.”

Historical Precedent and Industry Shifts

Marvel’s departure from New York mirrors a similar move by rival publisher DC Comics, which relocated its offices to Burbank in 2015. IGN reported that the decision comes as Marvel looks to reverse a recent creative and market share slump. By integrating the publishing team with the broader creative organization, leadership aims to leverage the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reinvigorate its comic book output.

The company maintains that despite the physical move, its storytelling roots remain tied to its heritage. The transition will take place over the next 12 months, with the goal of completing the full relocation by July 2027.
