Bergen op Zoom‘s Burgemeester Vows to Address New Year’s Eve Arson and Vandalism
Burgemeester Margo Mulder has promised to deliver a report this month on the arson and destruction incidents that marred New Year’s Eve in Bergen op Zoom. The city’s mayor is distressed by the events that transpired across various neighborhoods during the six-hour period.
"I’m outraged by everything that happened," Mulder stated. "Our neighborhoods have been neglected for too long. You simply can’t make up for years of neglect in just six hours."
The burgemeester pointed to deliberate vehicle and scooter arsons, as well as a ban on gatherings near a bakery on Ericalaan in the Gageldonk neighborhood. Earlier in the week, the bakery was targeted by heavy fireworks, causing another blaze.

Supermarket Blaze Complicates Firefighting Efforts
The burgemeester labeled the actions of those responsible as "unbearable," citing a report on the municipal website stating that spinning tires hampered firefighting efforts.

Throughout the preparations for the new year, Mulder conferenced with many volunteers who she praised for their dedication. "It’s truly saddening when some people deliberately sabotage this excellent work," she remarked.
This month, the burgemeester will brief the municipal council on the incidents. In collaboration with the police, she is compiling a report to explore possible preventative measures for these occurrences in the future.
Supermarket’s Future Uncertain, No Injuries Reported
While the supermarket was severely damaged, Mulder expressed relief that the building remains standing and no casualties were reported. Area sales director Jan den Otter stated, "It affects a lot of people—our neighborhood and our employees. But we’re relieved that the building is still there and no one got hurt."
Neighborhoods Require More Attention, Police Presence
Mulder believes the neighborhoods have been too neglected over the years, emphasizing the importance of targeted community engagement and increased police presence. "We must change this together so that all residents can view the New Year’s celebrations as a joyful event again," she noted.
An abandoned car, charred from an earlier fire, was found on the supermarket’s parking lot. The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
