Breaking News: Norwegian MP MDMA Seized from Norwegian Parliamentarian's Baggage”>Gisle Meininger Saudland Caught with MDMA at Oslo Airport
In a significant development, Norwegian MP Gisle Meininger Saudland (38) was intercepted at Oslo Gardermoen Airport on September 3, 2022, with a small quantity of MDMA in his luggage. The MP, who represents the Progress Party (FrP), was returning from a private overseas trip when he was stopped by customs officials, whose dogs alerted them to the presence of the illicit substance.
MDMA Seized and Analyzed
The Norwegian Customs Service seized the suspected narcotics, which have now been analyzed by the Norwegian National Criminal Investigation Service (Kripos). The results confirm that the seized substance was indeed 0.98 grams of MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy tablets. MDMA is a central nervous system stimulant that has been used recreationally since the 1980s, with one gram typically containing around ten user doses.
Saudland’s Response and Potential Charges
Saudland is currently under investigation for the importation of a narcotic substance. His lawyer has confirmed that he has not yet responded to the charges. In a statement to Aftenposten, the lawyer said, "He has been informed of the analysis results and has expressed his wish to give a statement at the upcoming interrogation. Any potential penalty will be assessed after the suspect has been interrogated."
For smaller quantities of drugs, a fine is typically the most likely penalty, which would be registered in the criminal record. This could also lead to other restrictions, such as losing one’s driver’s license or facing an asset forfeiture order.
FrP’s Stance on Narcotics and Potential Party Action
The Progress Party has been working politically against the decriminalization of smaller amounts of narcotics. Their ethical and organizational guidelines also clearly state a zero-tolerance policy for narcotics. In response to the latest developments, FrP’s assistant secretary general, Helge Fossum, told Aftenposten, "If these allegations are true, it is unacceptable. Saudland is currently on sick leave and not attending the Storting. The party will evaluate any measures once a final legal decision has been made."
Saudland’s Political Career
Saudland serves on the Labour and Social Affairs Committee in the Storting. He has announced that he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming parliamentary elections, citing his pendler lifestyle as the reason. He has previously been a local politician in Flekkefjord, serving on the municipal council from 2007 to 2015.
