Meta Unveils $1,299 Meta VR Glasses for Spring 2027 Release

Meta unveiled its $1,299 Meta VR Glasses at the annual Meta Connect conference, offering a 100-gram spectacle design powered by an external compute puck. Scheduled to launch in spring 2027, the headset relies on eye and hand tracking to target personal entertainment, computing, and gaming.

Meta Platforms has taken direct aim at Apple’s high-end spatial computing line, introducing a lightweight wearable that trades traditional ski-goggle enclosures for an open-sided spectacle frame. Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg debuted the Meta VR Glasses during the company’s annual Connect conference, setting a price of $1,299 ahead of a planned spring 2027 release.

Hardware Architecture and Weight Reductions

Weighing in at approximately 100 grams, the new eyewear achieves its slender profile by stripping out high-heat components from the head-worn frame. Core computing elements, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, 12GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage, reside entirely inside an external, pocketable tethered puck that weighs 300 grams. This offloaded architecture allows the glasses to remain five times lighter than a standard Meta Quest 3 headset, minimizing facial strain during extended use.

The device features 5K micro-OLED displays providing 2.4K resolution per eye, complemented by built-in sensors that handle eye tracking and hand gestures. Because the system omits traditional controllers by default, users use the interface by staring at virtual icons and pinching their thumb and index fingers together. Optional support for Touch Plus controllers and gamepads remains available for running traditional Quest games and Xbox Cloud Gaming titles.

Media Consumption and Cinematic Partnerships

Meta highlighted that the glasses are the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device, letting users watch movies in expanded aspect ratios through Disney’s streaming ecosystem.

Market Positioning Against Apple’s Vision Pro

At $1,299, Meta’s hardware undercuts Apple’s Vision Pro, which currently retails for $3,699 following a price adjustment. While Apple’s device relies on a laptop-class M5 chip, a wider 100-degree field of view, and a heavier enclosed housing weighing up to 800 grams, Meta targets everyday wearability and extended media sessions.

For productivity tasks, the glasses project up to three virtual desktop screens or connect directly to macOS and Windows machines via USB-C or Bluetooth to serve as an external monitor. Battery life extends up to three hours of continuous video playback on a single charge, supported by 45W fast charging through the tethered compute puck.

Developer Ecosystem and App Competitions

To build out software support ahead of launch, Meta launched a $1 million developer competition through its Meta VR Start program. The initiative will award 20 prizes of up to $100,000 for new and significantly updated apps across entertainment, gaming, and productivity, placing special emphasis on hands-first interaction mechanics.
