Meteņi Celebrations in Rīga
On February 21, the folk tradition of ‘Meteni’ will take place in Rīga’s Old Town and is open to all. The event will feature traditional Meteņi mascots, wrestling and bragging competitions, and rituals intended to bring success and prosperity in the coming year.
Posters advertising the event depict the Budēļi, Ķekata, and Gypsy masks, which symbolize joy, luck, health, prosperity, fertility, and blessing. These illustrations were created by artist Māra Čaure, inspired by the story and traditions of Meteņi.
Festivities will begin at 12:00 with the lighting of a bonfire in the Town Hall Square, followed by a mascot procession through the streets and squares of Old Riga. Attendees are encouraged to wear masks – traditional or reflecting current events – and participate in the celebrations.
Performances by traditional groups, “JUUK,” and “Tautumeitas” are scheduled, along with dances with the Jelgava folklore group “Dimzēns.” A fireball burning ritual and a concert by hip-hop artist Fiņķis will conclude the day at 5:00 p.m.
Modernism in Liepāja
A new exhibition, “Classical Modernism in Latvia. Painting. Graphics (1911–1930),” opened at the Liepāja Museum on February 20 and will run until April 26. The exhibition features works by 50 Latvian artists and was created in collaboration with the art museum “Zuzeum” and the Latvian National Museum of Art (LNMM).
The exhibition highlights a significant period in Latvian art history – the formation of a new state and its identity, where art played a key role.
