Michael Goessling, a 59-year-old Missouri man adopted as an infant, discovered through a 23andMe DNA test that his biological father is five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald. The connection led to a family reunion.
How a 23andMe DNA Test Connected Michael Goessling to His Biological Family
For nearly six decades, Michael Goessling knew he was adopted. Raised in a suburb of St. Louis by his adoptive parents, Paul and Kay Goessling, he often wondered about his biological origins while enjoying a happy childhood with the family who brought him home.
The breakthrough that changed everything did not come from Goessling himself. About 15 years ago, as he prepared to become a father, he registered with the genetic testing company 23andMe primarily to check for inherited medical issues, according to CNN.

That decision paid off when a half-brother he never knew existed submitted his DNA to the platform. Within 36 hours, the system flagged a match identifying Michael Goessling as a half-brother in St. Louis. That initial notification set off a chain of events that connected Goessling first with his birth mother on his 58th birthday and ultimately with his biological father.
Discovering That the Doobie Brothers Singer Is His Father
When Goessling first spoke over the phone with the man identified as his biological father, he did not immediately know who was on the line. The conversation turned when his father mentioned that he worked as a musician and would be passing through St. Louis on tour, prompting Goessling to ask if he was speaking with Michael McDonald.
“I just said: ‘What a voice that guy has!’… it just sounded so familiar, but I couldn’t place it.”

McDonald confirmed his identity with a chuckle, telling him Yeah, I’m afraid so
according to the same reporting. McDonald, a five-time Grammy winner and lead vocalist for The Doobie Brothers who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, had fathered a child with his middle school sweetheart when they were both 14 years old.
A Face-to-Face Reunion in St. Louis and Relief After Decades of Guilt
The biological parents had placed their infant son for adoption through a closed process with adoptive parents who lived roughly 20 minutes away, leaving both teenagers to go their separate ways. Over the decades, McDonald and Goessling’s birth mother remained close friends, carrying a lingering worry about what happened to the child they gave up.

“We always talked about him. And it always came down to our greatest fear: how did life treat him? I always carried that guilt with me. But just to know that he was okay and that he had a good life, and a life certainly that I wouldn’t have been able to afford him at that time, was a great reward.”

The father and son eventually met in person around the time of McDonald’s concert performance in St. Louis. Goessling recalled that McDonald opened his arms, gave him a large bear hug, and told him he loved him. The pair also realized a series of uncanny coincidences: they share the exact same first name despite the closed adoption.
McDonald Praises Adoptive Parents and Becomes a Grandfather
Throughout the reunification, Goessling maintained that learning about his biological roots only added to his life without diminishing the family that raised him. McDonald echoed that sentiment, directing his highest praise toward his son’s adoptive parents.

The family tree expanded further during the reunion when McDonald learned that Goessling is a married father of two, instantly making the music icon a grandfather. McDonald admitted he was still wrapping his head around that new role while speaking to reporters about his newly discovered daughter-in-law and grandchildren.
