Michaela Straková has secured Slovakia’s first-ever Youth Junior Individual Gold in biathlon, triumphing in the youth women’s individual competition at the World Championships in Arber, Germany. The 18-year-old biathlete finished the 10km race with a remarkable time of 33:15.4, despite challenging rainy conditions.
Dominating Performance Despite Difficult Conditions
Straková’s victory wasn’t simply about speed; it was a display of composure, and accuracy. She navigated the course with only one penalty, finishing a significant 1:05.6 minutes ahead of Norway’s Hanna Voelstadová, who took silver. Viktorija Chvostenková of Ukraine rounded out the podium with a bronze medal, 1:19.7 minutes behind the winner.
The conditions were far from ideal. “The weather wasn’t cooperating today, with a couple of degrees and rain. It was a bit of a shock, but I tried to cope with it as best as I could,” Straková stated, according to slovenskybiatlon.sk. Despite a missed target on the first prone shooting stage, which initially placed her 18th, she recovered brilliantly, delivering clean shooting in the subsequent stages.

This win builds upon Straková’s already impressive career trajectory. Last year, she secured gold medals in both the sprint and individual events at the Winter EYOF in Bakuriani, Georgia, demonstrating her consistent performance on the international stage.
A Tight Race to the Finish
The race wasn’t without its drama. Straková found herself in contention as Voelstadová faltered on the final standing stage, missing two targets. Straková capitalized on this, securing the lead and maintaining it to the finish. She likewise posted the fastest overall ski time, one second faster than her Norwegian competitor.
“I’m highly happy that I was able to compete with her. I saw her in front of me or we were overtaking each other depending on how we came off the shooting range. I do what I can on the skis. On the shooting range, it’s something completely different, and I try to feel as little as possible,” Straková explained.
Slovak Team Performance
While Straková’s gold was the highlight, other Slovakian biathletes also competed. Ema Malíková finished 29th with two penalties, 5:57.5 minutes behind Straková. Barbora Fedorová placed 41st with three penalties (+7:24.1), and Dominika Patrášová finished 52nd, incurring four penalties (+8:22.8).
