Microsoft Tests Free Ad-Supported Cloud Gaming for Xbox Insiders

Microsoft started testing a free, ad-supported tier for Xbox Cloud Gaming on July 23, 2026, allowing Xbox Insiders to stream select library games for up to one hour per session after watching pre-roll advertisements, providing an alternative to paid subscriptions as hardware costs climb.

Xbox Insiders Test Ad-Supported Cloud Streaming

Microsoft is rolling out a new way to access cloud gaming without an upfront subscription fee. According to The Verge, Xbox Wire, and The Hollywood Reporter, members of the Xbox Insider Program can now stream select titles from their personal game libraries for free by watching advertisements before gameplay begins.

Until this test, accessing Xbox Cloud Gaming required an active Game Pass subscription. The new test option removes that paywall for participating testers, though sessions are capped at one hour. Players who want to continue past the initial time limit can watch a new block of ads to resume playing, as Variety reported. Pre-roll advertisements run for up to two minutes, and ads will not interrupt gameplay once a session starts. Microsoft said the ad-supported streaming option will only be available for a limited time during a “test period.” It previously began internally testing an ad-supported version of Xbox Cloud Gaming late last year, with sources telling The Verge at the time that the test included about two minutes of preroll ads before streaming sessions.

Library Access, Supported Devices, and Limitations

The ad-supported streaming option applies exclusively to games that users already own in their libraries or to free-to-play titles like Call of Duty: Warzone, Genshin Impact, and “War Thunder,” according to Variety. More than 1,800 games in the Xbox Store support cloud game streaming, though it should be noted the Xbox Insiders ad test experience does not offer players access to all available games—just those titles the user already owns or that are free-to-play.

Compatible devices for the streaming test include Xbox consoles (Xbox One and newer), supported TVs (newer Samsungs/LGs), VR headsets, Windows PCs, tablets and mobile devices. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the feature provides true gaming on the go, whereas remote-access allows players to stream directly from their own hardware.

Our goal is simple. Give more people more affordable ways to play, Xbox wrote in a blog post.

The company stated in its official rollout that cloud can also help Xbox One owners play newer games built for Xbox Series X|S without needing to purchase new hardware right away. That can be especially meaningful in places where consoles are harder to find or less affordable, giving more players another way to access great games on devices they already have.

Business Pressures and Industry Context

The test arrives as Microsoft navigates financial adjustments across its gaming division. CNBC reported that Microsoft started selling its inaugural Xbox console in 2001, and today Xbox trails Nintendo and Sony in console sales. Amazon and Microsoft have devised new ways to get people playing video games in the cloud. Microsoft’s Xbox division said Thursday that it will test an advertising-supported way of letting people stream video games.

Amazon, meanwhile, announced plans to add the Luna cloud gaming service to its Prime Video streaming platform. Amazon includes Prime Video in Prime subscriptions, which cost $14.99 per month. Amazon’s adjustment will give Luna more front-and-center promotion on its website, whereas previously Luna was only accessible through a dedicated website. The two companies have succeeded in cloud computing but have stumbled as they have tried to get people hooked on games over sometimes unreliable internet connections, which can result in latency.

Xbox Cloud Gaming Just Got a Massive Update: Free Games & Ads

At the same time, Microsoft also increased Game Pass prices, but added unlimited cloud gaming to its lowest-priced Game Pass Essential subscription, which costs $9.99 per month. Previously, you needed a Game Pass Ultimate subscription for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Microsoft’s Xbox CEO, Asha Sharma, spoke at the Bloomberg Tech conference in San Francisco on June 4, 2026. Introducing an ad-supported tier borrows from competitors like GeForce Now, offering a lower-cost entry point for players who want to avoid subscription fees.

Microsoft’s Five Principles for Advertising

To address historical pushback from players regarding in-game advertisements, advertising has existed in gaming for decades, from in-game placements to free-to-play models. But it hasn’t always been built with the player in mind. When done well, advertising can help lower the cost of access, creating another way for players to get into games without an upfront streaming purchase and expanding audiences through new ways to play.
