In a shocking turn of events, the Dnepropetrovsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office has revealed a sophisticated criminal scheme targeting the bank accounts of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. The operation involved a group of five individuals, including an IT specialist and a worker from the regional bureau of forensic medical examinations.
The group exploited their access to the morgue to steal SIM cards and mobile phones from the deceased soldiers. The IT specialist then gained full access to the victims’ bank accounts by changing passwords. The accused proceeded to withdraw cash, take out loans, and transfer funds to their own accounts, causing a total loss of over 1.5 million Ukrainian hryvnias (UAH) to 20 affected families.
The mastermind behind the scheme was identified as a 32-year-old IT specialist. Among the group was also a 42-year-old repeat offender with a criminal record. All suspects are currently in custody and face charges of theft, fraud, and unauthorized access to computer systems. If convicted, they could face up to eight years in prison.
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police jointly carried out the operation to apprehend the suspects on July 9, 2023. Additionally, investigators believe the group sold personal belongings of the deceased soldiers through online platforms, with the scheme active between 2023 and 2024.
This grim reminder of the human cost of war underscores the importance of vigilance and robust security measures to protect the vulnerable, even in the most challenging circumstances.
