Indonesian Minister Raja Juli’s recent proposal to utilize 20 million hectares of reserved forest land for food security has sparked controversy, drawing criticism from environmentalists who argue for a better understanding of hutan’s role in the country’s ecosystem.
Firman, a Golkar politician and chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Society of Conservation and Environmental Education (SOKSI), slammed the minister’s proposal, asserting that it indicated a lack of comprehension about the concept and function of Indonesia’s forests.
"Such disregard for the philosophical and functional aspects of Indonesia’s forests is alarming," Firman stated in a press release on January 4, 2025. "We urge the minister to be better informed on the matter."
The potential conversion of forest land for non-perennial crops like horticulture, cassava, sugarcane, and others, as suggested by the minister, is seen as a threat to Indonesia’s environmental stability, particularly in the face of escalating climate change concerns.
While acknowledging the government’s noble intentions to achieve food self-sufficiency, Firman believes that the ambition can be achieved without compromising Indonesia’s green cover.
"Expanding farmlands isn’t the only solution," he said. "We can increase production without resorting to deforestation. We must prioritize the preservation of our forests and ecosystems."
