Woman Confuses Nail Glue with Eye Drops, Faces Months of recovery
A woman in North Carolina is living a nightmare after mistaking nail glue for eye drops, leading to severe injuries that may take months to recover from. The woman, who has not been identified, accidentally used the strong adhesive in place of her regular eye drops, thinking the two bottles looked similar.
"The pain was immediate and intense," she recalled, speaking to local media. "I screamed and ran to the sink, trying to rinse my eyes, but it was too late."
Nail glue contains strong chemicals designed to bond with fingernails and toenails, making it a highly potent irritant when it comes into contact with the eyes. The woman immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed severe chemical burns in both eyes.
"I could barely open my eyes, and when I did, everything was blurred and incredibly painful," she said. "The doctors told me I might not regain my full vision, and even if I do, it could take several months."
Experts warn that similar accidents can happen easily, as many people tend to store nail care products and eye drops together in bathrooms. To avoid such tragedies, they advise clearly labeling all bottles, keeping them separate, and being extra careful when using eye drops, especially in low light.
"I never thought something like this could happen," the woman said. "Now, I’m just hoping and praying that my eyes will fully heal, and I can see the light again."
Medical professionals remind the public that nail glue and other similar products should be considered hazardous materials when not in use, and should be stored safely out of reach from children and pets.
"I can’t stress enough how important it is to double-check what you’re using, especially when it comes to products like these," said an ophthalmologist involved in the woman’s care. "A moment of carelessness can lead to serious, life-altering consequences."
