Bulgaria is set to experience a significant shift in its weather pattern, with snowfall and dropping temperatures expected across the country over the next few days. Here’s what to expect, according to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH).

Thursday:

  • Morning: Fog or low cloud cover will linger in many low-lying areas and valleys, while the west and central regions will see scattered medium and high clouds.
  • Afternoon: Visibility will improve, but clouds will increase from the northwest, eventually covering the entire country by nightfall. Snow is expected in the northwest, accompanied by a strengthening northwest wind that will bring in cold air.
  • Temperatures: Most places will see highs between 12°C and 17°C, with Sofia around 12°C.

Thursday Night to Friday:

  • Weather: A cold atmospheric front will bring rain and snow across the country.
  • Temperatures: Overnight lows will range from -3°C in some valleys to 10°C in some parts of the Fore-Balkan region, with Sofia around 1°C.

Friday:

  • Coast: Expect fog or low clouds before noon, followed by mostly sunny conditions. A moderate south-southwest wind will blow, with highs between 12°C and 16°C, and sea temperatures ranging from 8°C to 10°C.
  • Inland: Sunny with scattered clouds, turning more overcast by evening. Snow is expected in Western Stara Planina, with more regions seeing snowfall overnight. Winds will shift from southwest to northwest, strengthening throughout the day. Highs at 1200m will be around 10°C, and 2000m around 2°C.

Saturday:

  • Rain and Snow: Widespread rain and snow expected, with temperatures remaining largely unchanged.
  • Nightfall: Snow will continue, and temperatures will dip slightly.

Sunday:

  • More Snow: Expect continued snowfall, with temperatures staying relatively stable and a snow cover forming and persisting.
  • Wind: Moderate northwesterly winds, strong in the Danube Plain, with gusts and blizzards in mountain passes.
