Montreal Restaurateur Warns Others After Coordinated Dine-and-Dash

by Chief Editor

A Montreal restaurateur is warning local business owners to remain vigilant after a group of six diners allegedly left Yans Deli without paying a nearly $500 bill. Owner Benji Greenberg, who reported the incident occurred on July 6, believes the dine-and-dash was a coordinated effort to exploit restaurant operations during busy service hours.

The Anatomy of the Alleged Dine-and-Dash at Yans Deli

The incident began when two individuals entered the Ferrier St. establishment, inquiring about the menu before requesting a table for a larger party. According to Greenberg, four additional people joined them shortly after, bringing the total group to six. The diners opted for large-format orders, including platters, meats, and sausages, rather than individual plates.

Greenberg, who was operating the dining room alone due to a staff member calling in sick, noted a shift in the group’s behavior as the meal progressed. He reported that the diners became increasingly demanding and rude, at one point physically grabbing his shirt to direct service. The situation culminated when the group requested that the $500 bill be split into six precise individual tabs. While Greenberg was occupied with the complex billing request, packing Uber orders, and attending to other customers, the group exited the premises.

Online commenters responding to Greenberg’s social media post identified the “complex bill split” request as a common tactic used in similar dining fraud cases to distract staff and create a window for departure.

Greenberg, who opened Yans Deli in August 2025 following a career in kitchens including Joe Beef, stated that the financial loss was secondary to the breach of hospitality. He has since released security camera footage and images of the suspects to social media to alert other local business owners.
