Chile: Woman Walks 264 km to Ministry of Health, Seeking Clarity on COVID-19 Vaccine Anaphylaxis

In an extraordinary display of determination and advocacy, Alejandra Valladares, accompanied by her husband and father, completed a 264-km trek from Talca to the Ministry of Health in Santiago. Their mission: to raise awareness about Valladares’ severe anaphylaxis following her COVID-19 vaccination and to urge the Ministry to secure a Pfizer vaccine sample for allergy testing.

Valladares, who had never experienced such a severe reaction before, developed anaphylaxis days after receiving her first Pfizer-BioNTech dose. The group handed over a personal letter to Minister of Health Ximena Aguilera, reiterating their request for a vaccine sample to identify the cause of Valladares’ condition.

Diputada Ana María Gazmuri, who has consistently championed this cause in Congress, praised Valladares’ struggle and called for immediate action. "Alejandra has suffered a grave anaphylaxis due to the Pfizer COVID vaccine," she said. "We need the vaccine sample to find the root cause. Pfizer has refused, but we have the Minister’s commitment to continue supporting Alejandra and others affected."

Valladares expressed gratitude for the Minister’s reception and the journey’s culmination. "Walking 264 km from Talca to Santiago, I hope to shed light on the plights of those with adverse vaccine reactions," she commented.

Gazmuri emphasized the need for the Ministry to honor its commitment to Valladares and create a registry of all Chileans affected by COVID-19 vaccine adverse effects, offering them support and treatment. She also criticized the Institute of Public Health (ISP) for its lack of response, despite having a year to investigate the issue.

This story underscores the need for comprehensive medical support and resources for individuals experiencing adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines. As vaccinations continue worldwide, so does the importance of understanding and addressing these reactions, ensuring no one faces medical challenges alone.
