Much of the North Island is bracing for another warm and muggy evening, according to the latest forecast from MetService. Meteorologist Michael Pawley described the current conditions as a “soupy mess of humid air” affecting most areas.
Heat Alerts and Overnight Temperatures
Napier is expected to reach a high of 32°C during the day, with overnight temperatures remaining unusually warm at 23°C. Auckland is also forecast to experience a mild night, with a low of 21°C. Heat alerts are currently in effect for both Napier and Hastings, where daytime highs could reach 32°C and 33°C respectively.
These warmer overnight temperatures may disrupt sleep. Massey University sleep scientist Leigh Signal has suggested strategies for coping with the heat, including using non-synthetic bedding, practicing relaxation techniques if awakened, and engaging in calming activities if unable to fall back asleep within 30 minutes. A Contrast in Conditions
Conditions in the South Island are expected to be markedly different. MetService indicates a possibility of snow above 1200 metres in the Canterbury region beginning Tuesday afternoon. Tomorrow, the maximum temperature in Canterbury is expected in the early morning, followed by a drop to a chilly 12°C for the remainder of the day.
Heavy rain watches are in place for the Westland ranges south of Fox Glacier through this evening, and are also expected for Marlborough south of Seddon and Canterbury north of the Rangitata River tomorrow. The latter watch carries a high probability of being upgraded to an orange rain warning. Strong wind watches are also active for Fiordland, Westland, and Grey District.
Looking Ahead to the Long Weekend
The forecast for the latter half of the week appears more promising, particularly for those planning outdoor activities. MetService reports that high pressure is expected to move over Aotearoa, bringing more settled weather. Thursday should see sunshine in time for the Laneway Festival in Auckland’s Western Springs. Waitangi Day on Friday is forecast to have fine spells in the North Island, especially in eastern areas, though onshore winds may bring some cloud cover. In the South Island, a band of rain is expected to move up from Westland, while eastern areas, including Nelson and Marlborough, are likely to experience more sunny conditions, with a few showers spilling over from the Southern Alps further south.
