The National Seismological Service (SSN) of Mexico reported a series of earthquakes on the morning of Sunday, December 22, 2024, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 4.3. The tremors occurred within a short period, affecting different regions across the country.

Morning Earthquakes

The first earthquake, a magnitude 4.0, was recorded at 7:47 AM local time, with its epicenter located 29 km northwest of La Mira, Michoacán, at a depth of 10.1 km. The SSN reported that this was the strongest earthquake of the series.

Around 4:50 AM, a magnitude 3.3 earthquake struck 10 km south of Atoyac de Álvarez, Guerrero, with a depth of 45.3 km. Less than an hour later, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake was recorded 101 km south of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, at a depth of 16.1 km.

The SSN urges the public to remain vigilant and follow all safety measures in the event of an earthquake. Additionally, the agency reminded the public that Mexico is located in one of the most seismically active regions in the world, and earthquakes of varying magnitudes occur frequently.

In a statement, the Secretary of the Interior emphasized the importance of preparedness and the implementation of prevention measures to minimize the impact of earthquakes. The government reaffirmed its commitment to continuing research and technological development to improve early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms.

As Mexico continues to face the threat of earthquakes, the importance of preparedness and education cannot be overstated. The country’s unique geographical location along the Ring of Fire makes it a region with significant seismic activity, requiring constant vigilance and preparedness from its inhabitants.
