Russian Airports Lift Temporary Flight Bans; Others Temporarily Close Due to Security Concerns

Russia’s aviation sector saw a series of temporary flight restrictions and suspensions in recent days, with multiple airports lifting bans while others temporarily closed due to security concerns, primarily involving drone activity.

On Tuesday, flight restrictions at Russia’s major airports, including Moscow’s Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo, as well as St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo, were lifted after several days of disruption. The temporary bans had been imposed following the detection of unauthorised drones in the proximity of the airports, causing safety concerns.

Russian state news agency TASS reported that all flights had resumed at the affected airports by Wednesday, with no further delays or cancellations recorded. This development follows multiple days of disruptions that affected thousands of passengers.

Ukraine‘s security service has claimed responsibility for the drone incidents, stating that they were part of a covert operation targeting Russian infrastructure. Meanwhile, Russia has accused Ukraine of state terrorism and vowed to respond "appropriately."

In a separate incident, four Russian airfields were forced to temporarily suspend air traffic on Tuesday due to security threats. However, these restrictions were lifted later in the day, with no reported consequences for scheduled flights.

The recent episodes have highlighted the growing security challenges faced by Russia’s aviation sector, with drone incidents becoming a recurring issue. As the situation evolves, airlines and passengers are advised to monitor updates and prepare for potential disruptions to their travel plans.
