Murcia Blood Donation Drive: Ensuring Supply During Spring Festivities

The Regional Blood Donation Center in Murcia is urging residents to donate blood in the coming weeks to bolster supplies during Semana Santa (Holy Week) and the Spring Festivals. This critical appeal aims to guarantee that hospitals can meet the constant demand for blood components, even during peak holiday periods.

Why Blood Donations are Crucial

Hospitals require blood transfusions “every day of the year,” according to María Luisa Lozano, director of the Regional Blood Donation Center. Maintaining adequate reserves is particularly important during festive times when regular donation rates may decline. The center is deploying mobile units to various locations throughout the Region of Murcia to facilitate donations.

Mobile Donation Locations & Schedule

In addition to the center’s regular operating hours in Murcia and Cartagena, special donation points will be set up. On Saturday, April 4th, mobile units will be available at the Hospital Comarcal del Noroeste in Caravaca de la Cruz (9:30 AM – 2:00 PM) and the Nueva Condomina Shopping Center (4:00 PM – 9:00 PM). The Nueva Condomina location will also offer incentives, including two free tram rides and a movie ticket.

Regular mobile unit schedules for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays can be found on the Murcia Salud website: https://www.murciasalud.es/web/centro-regional-de-hemodonacion.

Who Can Donate?

Most people meet the requirements to donate blood. Donors must be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh over 50 kilograms (approximately 110 pounds), and be in decent health. Lozano emphasized the “altruistic and indispensable” nature of blood donations, highlighting their life-saving impact on patients with chronic illnesses, those undergoing surgery, and victims of accidents.

The Impact of Your Donation

Approximately 250 people donate blood daily in the Region of Murcia, playing a vital role in supporting patients needing transfusions for various conditions, including accidents, burns, heart surgery, organ transplants, and cancer treatment. The center stresses that the need for blood doesn’t pause during holidays.
