Murray River Crisis: Shrinking Water Supply Threatens Region

New scientific research warns that long-term health in the Murray River is declining across Australia, threatening communities and vital food-producing industries despite recent rainfalls that have temporarily replenished the waterway. The Murray River provides water to New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia for food production, town supplies, environmental needs, and power generation.

Long-Term Decline in Upper Murray River Levels

Recent rainfall has made the Murray River appear to be flowing strongly, but researchers from the University of Technology Sydney point to a worrying long-term trajectory. Dr Milton Speer stated that climate change is actively reducing river levels in the Upper Murray before water even reaches heavily managed and extracted sections downstream. The research indicates that river levels are failing to reach the minimum six-metre threshold required for water to flow beyond Waikerie. Speer emphasized that the decline extends beyond human river management, noting that the climate signal is clear in the Upper Murray where little to no water extraction occurs.

Professor Lance Leslie, also from the University of Technology Sydney, noted that the Lower Murray faces severe vulnerability from climate change, water extraction, and human management. While recent flows are welcome, Leslie explained that they do not reverse more than three decades of declining river levels. Analysis points to a significant drop in Upper Murray River levels since the early 1990s, matching patterns of reduced rainfall. Leslie stated that dry years can no longer be treated as isolated incidents, warning that climate change is actively reshaping the baseline of the Murray system.

Growing Water Demand Threatens Regional Security

Water security is under mounting pressure as demand rises alongside a growing population, higher irrigation needs, and water-intensive facilities such as artificial intelligence data centres. Dr Speer warned that the shrinking supply presents a direct threat to towns, farmers, Traditional Owners, and industries relying on the Murray River. Researchers report that pressure is building on federal, state, and local government authorities to supply adequate environmental flows that can sustain ongoing demands. The resulting water losses create a direct threat to national food security.

Policy Changes and Future Management

Professor Leslie described the upcoming review of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan as a critical opportunity to align water policy with changing climate realities. According to the researchers, current management arrangements fail to deliver the environmental flows necessary to keep the river healthy. Maintaining proper river health while accommodating growing water demands will require more effective and cost-efficient management practices from authorities.

Key questions about the declining Murray River and food supply

What is causing the decline in the Murray River?
Researchers point to climate change and reduced rainfall as primary drivers, noting that water levels in the Upper Murray have been dropping since the early 1990s independent of water extraction.

How much of Australia’s food supply relies on the Murray?
The arid and semi-arid reaches of the Murray River produce 40 per cent of Australia’s food supply.

What regions share the water from the Murray River?
The waterway’s water is shared among New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia for food production, town water supplies, power, environmental needs, and other uses.

How will future water demands from new technologies like AI data centres impact communities along the Murray River?
