The Struggle Unfolds

On Monday, Mya’s condition worsened, and she was hospitalized. Doctors were unable to determine the exact cause of her illness but prescribed antibiotics due to her severe condition. Despite their efforts, Mya’s condition deteriorated further, and she experienced frightening epileptic seizures.

Mya was eventually diagnosed with meningitis and transferred to the Radboudumc in Nijmegen. Her parents sat by her side as she underwent extensive testing. The news was devastating: Mya’s brain was severely damaged, and her chances of recovery were slim. After three days, the heartbreaking decision was made to let Mya go. She passed away in her parents’ arms on September 1, 2023.

The Fight for Awareness

In the aftermath of their loss, Mabel and Ted were determined to raise awareness about meningitis. They shared Mya’s story to emphasize the importance of early detection and emphasized that parents should trust their instincts when it comes to their child’s health.

To honor Mya’s memory, the couple created MYAngel, a knitted sanctuary that resembles Mya and is sold to support the ItsME Stichting, which funds meningitis research and promotes awareness. Mya’s legacy lives on through her parents’ unwavering commitment to making a difference and saving lives.

Early Detection and Parent’s Instinct

Meningitis, a severe infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, can be challenging to diagnose, especially in young children. Early detection and proper treatment are critical, as the condition can rapidly progress and lead to lifelong complications or death.

Parents play a crucial role in identifying the symptoms of meningitis. Familiarizing themselves with the condition’s signs can help them act promptly if they suspect their child may be affected. Trusting one’s instincts is also essential, as it may lead to earlier detection and intervention.

Support and Resources

The ItsME Stichting (www.itsme-stichting.nl) is a Dutch foundation dedicated to funding meningitis research and promoting awareness. They provide valuable resources and support for families affected by meningitis.

In light of Mya’s tragic story, it is essential to raise awareness about meningitis and support initiatives that aim to improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. By doing so, we can help save lives and bring hope to families affected by this devastating condition.
