Historian Uncovers Shocking Truth Behind Grandfather’s WWII ‘Resistance’ Story
- Veterans and families across the Netherlands are grappling with emotional turmoil as historian Boukje Distel discovers that many grandfathers who claimed to be part of the Dutch Resistance during WWII were, in fact, not.*
In a groundbreaking study published in the Historical Journal, Distel reveals that over 30% of the men who received special post-war pensions for their role in the Resistance actually played no significant part in the liberation fight. Instead, they exploited the chaos of war to amass personal fortunes or simply benefit from the Resistance’s reputation.
"I was shocked," admitted Henk Jansen, a 70-year-old man whose grandfather, he believes, never engaged in any resistant activities. "I grew up hearing stories about my grandfather’s bravery. Finding out it was likely made up is devastating."
Distel’s research, based on recently declassified military archives and interviews with surviving WWII veterans, paints a harsh reality. Many men claimed false Resistance identities, donned fake badges, and used the network to profit or survive — not to fight the Nazi regime.
"I hate to burst the bubble of many families," said Distel, "but sometimes history is not what we want it to be."
The Netherlands’ Agency for War Victims is now under pressure to review its records and pensions, following Distel’s findings. Directorlandet Jan Koopmans acknowledged their responsibility: "This raises serious questions about our pension system, and we will cooperate fully with the historian’s ongoing research."
While the news has sparked outrage and sadness across the country, it has also inspired some to delve deeper into their family histories, eager to uncover the truth behind their relatives’ wartime stories. Meanwhile, others hold onto their beliefs, refusing to accept that their heroes might not have been so heroic after all.
As for Jansen, he remains hopeful. "I still believe there’s a chance my grandfather was involved, even if it’s just a small one. I choose to remember the stories I grew up with."
