The price tag for the mission, which aims to demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion for the first time, was confirmed by the agency this week. NASA intends to spread the $2.1 billion cost over several fiscal years, with specific allocations targeting $640 million in 2026, $890 million in 2027, $415 million in 2028, and $180 million in 2029, according to documents viewed by Politico.
Funding the Nuclear Mars Mission
The agency’s financial plan for the mission relies on internal resource realignment. NASA officials stated they are pulling funds from the exploration account and money secured through a party-line reconciliation bill passed last year. Despite the high cost, the agency maintains that the project fits within its existing budget framework.

Development Strategy and Hardware Reuse
To meet the goal of a 2028 launch, NASA is intentionally limiting the creation of new technology. The agency is repurposing the Power and Propulsion Element, a component originally built for the Gateway lunar station before that program was canceled earlier this year.
This strategy of leveraging existing hardware is central to the agency’s effort to manage costs and timelines. As Glaze noted during a June meeting with the National Academies’ Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board, We’re trying to leverage as much as we can with as little new development as possible. I know that’s always a challenge. It always sounds good on paper, but that’s really the intent.

The mission requires significant inter-agency cooperation. NASA is currently collaborating with the Department of Energy to handle the design and assembly of the nuclear reactor. This work is occurring alongside the agency’s other major priorities, including the ongoing efforts to return humans to the Moon and establish a lunar outpost.
The final program-wide budget remains subject to change as the mission architecture undergoes formal design maturation. NASA officials emphasized that the current approach reflects a broader objective to prioritize missions with near-term exploration and scientific opportunities. However, the agency has yet to provide a definitive cost estimate for the SkyFall scientific component, leaving a significant portion of the total mission expenditure currently undefined.
