New Year’s Eve Marred by Firework Incidents Across Norway
Two teenagers have been injured after a firework went wrong in Møre og Romsdal, with one teen sustaining serious hand injuries, according to police reports. The incident occurred at around 02:16, with one person transported to a medical facility and another to the hospital. Police are investigating the incident and a 20-year-old man has been reported for reckless use of fireworks, although no injuries were reported in this case.
In Innlandet, a cabin in Øyer caught fire on New Year’s Eve, with involvement from fireworks, although the cause remains unknown. Five people were involved, and one was transported to the hospital with potential serious injuries. The force of the blast was strong enough to blow in parts of the wall.
Earlier in the evening, around 23:45, Kristiansund police responded to reports of property damage, with local youth suspected of shooting fireworks at a school building. Around ten minutes later, a fire started in a technical room at Lambertseter school in Oslo, which was contained within 25 minutes. Police suspect that fireworks were shot into a ventilation shaft as the cause.
In Harstad, police reported reckless use of fireworks near the church at around 05:05. In Tromsø, a large gathering of young people at the old Alfheim swimming hall resulted in multiple individuals being removed due to intoxication and reckless use of fireworks. Police urge parents to collect their children if they are aware they are present.
Throughout the night, incidents involving reckless use of fireworks were reported across the country, including in Stjørdal where young people were shooting at each other and at houses. In Grimstad, two people were injured by fireworks, with police opening a case. In Lillehammer and Gjøvik, multiple youth were removed from public spaces for setting off illegal fireworks.
