Thick Fog Causes Travel Chaos Across Netherlands, Multiple Flights Canceled
Heavy fog has blanketed the entire Netherlands, causing widespread flight disruptions and closures, as well as traffic delays and cancellations on several major routes. The Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) has issued a ‘geel code’ weather warning, urging motorists and travelers to exercise extreme caution.
Flights impacted by the dense fog include numerous departures and arrivals at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Rotterdam The Hague Airport, and Eindhoven Airport. Airlines have reported multiple cancellations and diversions, leading to significant inconvenience for passengers and delays in air traffic.
The fog, described as ‘hardnekkige mist’ (persistent fog) by weather experts, has created treacherous conditions for drivers, causing several accidents and significant damage. Road users are advised to reduce speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and use low-beam headlights to improve visibility.
In addition to the travel disruptions, the dense fog has also caused issues at Eindhoven Airport, where several flights have been grounded, and others redirected to alternate destinations. Air traffic controllers have been working diligently to manage the situation and minimize further disruptions.
Harma Boer, a senior meteorologist at KNMI, stated, "The fog is expected to linger throughout the night and into the morning, potentially causing more travel delays and closures. We urge all road users and travelers to check the latest updates and plan accordingly."
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and travelers are advised to check the latest flight information and road conditions before setting out.
